Accidents and injuries can happen anytime and anywhere. They can even happen at the time you are moving some of your personal items to a mobile storage unit.

You can avoid hurting yourself and others when moving some of your possessions to a storage facility by keeping these important packing and moving tips and tricks in mind:

1. Pack properly

You will avoid hurting yourself and getting into an accident if you ensure you packed the items you want to store in the storage unit correctly.

Start by packing boxes or storage containers that you can actually carry without hurting your back. To be certain a container won’t be too difficult to carry, while putting items inside it, lift it every now and then to check that it is not too heavy for you as well.

Another important tip you have to remember is to put heavier items into smaller boxes and not in big ones. It will then be easier to carry these heavy items and avoid putting stress on your back.

Lastly, label each container. Categorize them as heavy, medium, and light. Make sure you have a list of what each container holds as well. Of course, you have to avoid carrying the heavy boxes and containers.

2. Relieve your tired muscles after a long day of packing

Packing for several hours can leave you exhausted and feel pain all over. You can soothe your tired, aching muscles and loosen stiff joints by soaking in a warm Epson salt bath at night.

In your tub, run a warm bath and add two cups of Epsom salt into the water.  Soak for at least 12 minutes to ease muscle pain. You can take an Epsom salt bath until the soreness subsides.

Alternatively, you can also get a full body massage after several hours of packing to relieve your tired muscles and relax a bit more.

3. Remove all possible obstacles

Before your boxes will be collected or prior to driving them to the facility, make sure there is enough space inside and outside your home to allow for free movement and safe routes out of your property.

Get rid of all small and big obstacles along the hallways and the paths leading out of your home. Keep the walkway and driveway free of dry leaves, protruding branches, and other debris that can turn out to be tripping hazards.

4. Wear the right clothes and footwear

To reduce the risk of accidents while lugging around personal effects, do not wear baggy clothes and accessories such as necklaces and bracelets. They can get caught in something and cause you trouble.

Wear the correct footwear as well to avoid injuring your feet. Put on a pair of closed sports shoes that have soles with good traction to avoid accidental slips and trips.

To keep your fingers safe and to improve your grip, wear thick protective gloves when lifting boxes and other containers.

5. Use your leg muscles to lift

To avoid getting hurt while carrying something, always remember to lift with your legs and not with your back. Lifting with your back will put a substantial strain on your muscles and tendons. In addition, when you lift with your legs, you will avoid getting tired easily.

To properly lift with your legs, spread your legs about hip-width apart. Next, bend your knees but keep your back straight before picking up a box.

6. Avoid lifting anything over your head

Whether you are carrying a box or storage container, do not lift it over your head. Lifting it over your head will put a strain your upper back and shoulders. It can cause an injury you may not notice until later on as well.

In addition, a bulky object over your head can impede your view which can cause you to trip or fall and hurt yourself or others.

7. Don’t rush it

Finally, even if you are in a hurry to put some of your belongings in a storage unit (and have more space in your home), don’t rush it. Do not run inside and outside your home to bring out a box every minute or so. Avoid carrying several boxes at once as well. All these can simply cause you to hurt yourself.

Take frequent breaks and don’t forget to drink water while you’re resting.

As a final tip, you can avoid a lot of heavy lifting and stress when you choose to rent one or more mini storage pods.

By choosing the right storage company, you will have your mini-pod delivered to your home for free. You can then pack all the items you want to store in the storage facility in this container. You can pack the items as they are or place them in boxes first before putting them in the mini-pod. Once done, you can lock the mini-pod and have it collected by the storage service provider. They will then store it in their secure, climate-controlled warehouse.

By following the right packing and lifting tips and being aware of other related services, you will avoid a lot of stress and reduce your chances of hurting yourself when you decide to move some of your belongings to a storage facility.
