First Mammography – Seven Important Things You Need to Know

First Mammography – Seven Important Things

Why do we need a mammogram at all? Breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer worldwide and it is the most frequent diagnosis in women.

If the diagnosis is made at an early stage, then there are many chances for a full recovery from this terrible disease.

The main methods of its early detection are the annual mammography and clinical studies conducted by specialists.

Mammography is not recommended for women under the age of 45 because the density of the breast tissue makes the result more difficult to interpret and, therefore, it is more difficult for doctors to detect problems.

In addition, the probability of breast cancer for 45 years is much lower.

If you are 35 to 40 years old, and you signed up for your first mammogram, take note of these tips.

1. You will feel unpleasant pressure

To ensure a high quality of mammography and to minimize exposure to a woman, a  small compression of the breast is necessary during this study.

In some women this can cause pain, others have only a slight discomfort.

This symptom, in itself, does not mean anything bad. Each woman has a very individual pain threshold, because of this and the difference of sensations.

If you feel pain, just remember that you have to wait just a few minutes, and then it will pass.

2. Do not plan the first mammogram right before menstruation

Mammography should be performed during the second and third week of the menstrual cycle. During this period, the smallest density of the glandular tissue of the breast, which helps to make a more thorough examination with the least discomfort.

In addition, during or immediately after menstruation, the chest is usually more sensitive, due to hormonal changes. This can increase discomfort and cause pain during the study.

3. Inform the doctor if you have silicone implants

Silicone implants can interfere with breast imaging during X-ray examination. Therefore, if you have them, it is extremely important to inform the examiner about this.

The specialist should adjust the dose of radiation, so that the breast gland was better visible. You will also find that the position in the study will be slightly different, depending on the size of the implants.

4. Do not wear a dress or overalls

Before the procedure, you will be asked to remove all clothing above the waist and wear a disposable gown that the radiologist will give you.

Therefore, avoid clothes that are difficult to remove.

Ideally, it is worth wearing a T-shirt or a shirt on the buttons, you will easily remove it and put it on again. While with a long dress or overalls you will lose a lot of time.

So, if you do not have enough time, choose something more practical.

5. Do not use deodorant in your armpits

You should not use  any cosmetic products on the mammary glands or under the armpits on the day of the mammography.

They can give an erroneous picture as a result, which will confuse your doctor, and he can put the wrong diagnosis.

Pay special attention to the remedies that leave traces, such as creams, deodorants and talc.

To avoid any doubt, you can ask your doctor if your normal deodorant will cause problems.

If you have a mammogram in the afternoon and you do not want to spend the whole day without a deodorant, you can take a shower just before the test and wash your armpits. After mammography, you can safely use deodorant.

6. Take a comfortable position

During the examination, allow the radiologist to help you take the correct position and warn him if you are uncomfortable.

The correct positioning of the chest in the device is important for viewing the entire gland. In order for this to happen, it is necessary that the patient feels comfortable.

Experts say that any change in the position during the survey can adversely affect the result. So, you need to talk to a technician and together look for the best position for your first mammogram.

You should talk about any possible problems that you may have, such as muscle contraction or difficulty lifting hands.

If you cannot take the right position, which happens in rare cases, you can try other methods of research, such as ultrasound.

7. Only an expert can explain the results

It is important to know that the radiologist is a professional who carries out the research, but he does not have the qualifications to interpret the results.

A radiologist can describe the main factors found on mammography using specific terms for each type of injury.

However, only a mammologist can explain the result of mammography in more detail. It is important not to panic after hearing a strange term, but to wait for a detailed explanation

Give time to your doctor to analyze the results and explain to you the real situation.

The first mammography: calmness, only calmness

During your first mammogram, you may feel anxious, because you are not sure what to expect.

Nevertheless, if you want to enjoy the optimum quality of life, this is a procedure that you cannot avoid, and it is definitely worth it to spend at the age of 40, especially if you have any risk factors.

Read about what you should expect before and during this test, stop worrying and discuss with your doctor the best time to perform this procedure.
