Food Allergies


They say, not able to test all delicacies in the world is like missing half of the magnificence of what life has to offer. Each country has a unique and exotic dish to die for, satisfying every taste palettes of the hungry devourer. But the thing is, not all can enjoy these tasty treats because of food allergies and some people around the globe is suffering under this conditions.

Food sensitiveness varies in each person, and the whole food pyramid could be a suspect in causing a particular person such misery. Food allergy for some is just a common itch, but in some worst cases, it could be life-threatening.

Diagnosing food allergies

It is quite dangerous to self-diagnose oneself or treat food allergies on your own as this may complicate matters even more. Food allergies vary from person to person, the same goes with symptoms and treatment. Food sensitiveness can cause problems in the integumentary system of the body especially the skin, can affect the respiratory system causing a person narrow airways, and can distress the cardiovascular system by blocking blood vessels.

It is best to go to a physician or allergist so that the proper authorities can examine the manifestations in one’s body.  They usually conduct diagnostic food allergy testing by questioning the patients about the thorough history of food allergies including the history of kin’s, then after, doing a blood test and lastly, perform a skin prick food allergy test. It is quite a long process but essential to have a definite diagnosis of what food a person is allergic to.

Dangers of Food Allergy

According to research, the most common food that triggers allergy are: dairy products usually milk, seafood or shellfish, eggs, nuts, meats (beef, chicken, pork, mutton), soy and many more, basically anything that can be seen in the vast choices in the food pyramid.

Allergic reaction in every person varies from the moment the food is in contact with the mouth or can develop hours later after consumption. Also, allergic reaction ranges from bearable to experiencing excruciating pain in the body, sometimes can even be life-threatening when not treated immediately. Usual manifestations are; itchiness or developing a rash in the extremities and other parts of the body, diarrhea, sneezing and dry cough.

Worse conditions include; chest pain, passing out, swelling of the body and trouble in breathing or swallowing. It is harder to diagnose a person with the specific food he or she is allergic with when exhibiting the former set of conditions compared to the latter as it can be symptoms of other illnesses.

Anaphylaxis. A life-threatening allergic reaction to higher allergic people. It is when the body reacts exaggeratedly to an allergen or in other words hypersensitiveness this causes the body to release chemicals that causes allergic indicators.  It might be swelling or hives, where the body results in something similar to uncomfortable pompousness, lowered blood pressure that may result in losing consciousness and shock. These conditions need to be treated immediately, as it can be deadly.

Combating Food Allergies

Test for food allergies. It is ideal, especially for kids to test for food allergies as early as possible to avoid consuming allergens since kids have a weaker immune system compared to adults.

Check the ingredients.  Now that we know what food to avoid, it is smart to always check the ingredients in the food; we plan to buy.

This will lessen the risk of consuming allergens.  Some parents are careless when it comes to this because they spend more time choosing between brands than checking the information about the selected products.

Inform your server. When dining out, it is evident that we are not aware of what ingredients are used in cooking the food that we order, so it is best to ask your waiter or inform them about your food allergies.

Always carry epinephrine. This is not just for a higher allergic person, but one must thoroughly equip themselves in case of worst-case scenarios. Epinephrine alleviates allergic reaction until aid comes to the rescue. Most importantly, it can save lives.

Medication can sometimes be a pain in the wallet, but we must ensure our safety above all. The good thing is that some clinics offer allergy drug coupons so consumers can enjoy some discounts, at the same time treat allergies.  It is always smart to equip ourselves with antihistamines in case of emergency.
