How to Recognize Appendicitis
The appendix is a tube-like process, similar to a worm, measuring 1.5 cm in volume and 10-15 cm in length. It is located at the very beginning of the large intestine, in the lower part of the abdomen, or more precisely, in its right lower square.
For a long time it was believed that this body is absolutely not needed by our body, since they could not recognize its function.
The only thing that was known about him, is that because of him there can be serious health problems, known to all of us ” appendicitis.“
However, during several scientific studies it was discovered that this process still has its purpose: it performs the immune function, as it is part of the lymphatic system, which is a network of interconnected nodes with special vessels through which lymph flows.
The reason for the inflammation of the appendix is still unknown. It is believed that this can occur as a result of obstruction (due to fecal masses), foreign object entry or, less often, because of the presence of a tumor.
The greatest concern for health experts is the lack of awareness of most people about appendicitis.
The fact is that many people really do not know about the warning signs of this condition, and therefore they recognize the correct diagnosis when it is already becoming very serious, if not critical.
And since early detection of appendicitis is the key to his successful treatment, taking this opportunity, we want to tell you about the warning signals of our body that should be kept in mind.
When the appendix is inflamed, one of the first symptoms is a slight pain around the navel or in an area called the “pit of the stomach”, it is often confused with the usual aching pain in the abdomen.
However, unlike the latter, this pain gradually becomes stronger and clearer, which, in fact, causes the person to doubt: “is everything normal?”.
It is very likely that this pain will be intensified when performing any completely natural movements or actions (light pressure, cough, etc.)
To test your suspicions, you need to gently press two fingers (index and middle) on the sore spot and hold it for two minutes. If this is really appendicitis, the pain will increase, and you may even cry out.
Hunchback, inability to straighten
If appendicitis is acute, then a person, as a rule, cannot straighten up and walks a bit stooped, hunched (leaning forward).
When trying to take a direct position of the body or when walking, the pain is markedly amplified, this warns us that something really is not right.
Most people who have an inflammation of the appendix prefer to lie down to feel some relief.
Another test is to cough or jump and see if the pain increases or not. This action is asked to do by the doctors themselves (one of the first steps) when making the diagnosis.
Increased body temperature
As you know, fever is a logical response of our immune system to the inflammatory process in the body, in this case it will also be a warning signal.
Normal temperature of the human body ranges from 35 to 37 ºC, its increase in combination with other symptoms may indicate an inflammation of appendicitis.
Nausea and vomiting
As the disease progresses, new more obvious symptoms appear, namely, nausea and vomiting.
However, as in the previous case, they can be associated with another disease, for example, with gastrointestinal disorders.
Changes in defecation
The pain is accompanied by problems with defecation? Later symptoms of appendicitis may include such changes in stool as constipation or, conversely, diarrhea. All this is connected with the inflammatory process.
Lack of appetite
This feature, if it accompanies the above, will be another confirmation that there is something wrong in the body and that, most likely, it is appendicitis.
Usually people sharply lose their appetite, and their attitude to food is so different from usual that it becomes clear: it is not a question of usual inflammation of the stomach or a viral infection.
Appendicitis: what complications can occur?
If you do not pay attention to the above symptoms, the inflammation of appendicitis will progress and the disease will reach a more serious and dangerous stage.
The worst complication of appendicitis is peritonitis, this is organ damage and the spread of infectious material beyond its limits, the outcome may be lethal.
A fistula, an abscess or a severe infection of the wound can also form. Therefore, the first symptoms should immediately seek medical help.
