Vaping has become a household name for many people, quickly replacing cigarettes as a healthier option. Vaporizers, or e-cigarettes, were originally created for medicinal purposes and have since become used for pleasure.

Many people use these electronic vaporizers to cut down on cigarette use or simply as an enjoyable hobby. Since e-cigarettes do not have tobacco in them, they are different from cigarettes and have been thought to be safer.

But researchers have argued over the last few years that vaping is unhealthy as well. With all of these modern studies that have been performed, does the final outcome show that vaping is truly bad for your health?

Everything Has Risks, and Vaping Does, Too

Like anything you do, especially if it is going to become a habit, you need to understand the pros and cons. While vaping was meant to help cigarette, smokers cut back on their unhealthy and dangerous habit, it is not completely benign in itself.

Studies have shown that there are similarities between cigarettes and vape pens. Certain aerosol particles produced by vaping can contain metals that are also found in cigarettes, such as cadmium and nickel. Other substances are found in both as well, like chromium and manganese, likely attributed to the heating coils, but not the e-liquid itself.

The most common argument against vaping is not that it is unhealthy, though – it’s that it may encourage more teenagers to begin smoking these types of e-cigarettes. While that may be a valid concern, it is not health-related.

Do the Benefits Outweigh the Risks?

Any time you inhale a chemical into your body, you are exposed to unnatural substances that can be dangerous. But the majority of independent research studies show that e-cigarettes are much safer than smoking tobacco products.

Smoking cigarettes every day has been linked to three times as much risk of heart attack for the user. Switching to vaping reduces that risk greatly. Using “dual” smoking, or doing both, increases that risk to up to five times, however.

No actual study, though, was able to confirm that vaping was what caused the increased chance for heart attack. They only could prove that the two were linked.

Instead, many studies show conclusive evidence that using e-cigarettes helps smokers gradually stop using tobacco-based products. There are side effects, but overall, vaping is 95% less harmful than regular cigarette use. That’s a huge statistic that could help prevent millions of diseases and deaths caused by cigarettes each year.

Learning how to vape correctly helps decrease the risks associated with vaping. There are safety recommendations for correct battery usage, handling e-liquids, and general safety when it comes to vaping.

Weigh the Pros and Cons
