Is Nail Biting Bad?

A lot of people of different ages around the world are constantly chewing on their nails . There are many reasons for this bad habit, but most experts agree that it is most often caused by stress or simply remains with adults since childhood.

According to statistics, 30% of children, 45% of teenagers, 25% of young people and 5% of older people gnaw nails , not thinking that this habit is extremely unaesthetic and harmful to health.

Some people claim that they can not control themselves and often do it unconsciously. The habit of gnawing nails can lead to depression and other negative emotions, and it causes problems with self-esteem. What else can happen if you gnaw nails?

Disease-causing bacteria

The area under the nails is an ideal medium for the reproduction of bacteria. Most often under the nails develop pathogenic bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella.

When a person gnaws nails, bacteria easily enter the mouth and spread throughout the body, causing various infections. In fact, usually the  nails are twice as dirty than the fingers, because they are much harder to thoroughly clean thoroughly. That is why under the nails an ideal environment for the development of bacteria is formed.

Nail infections

People who bite their nails face a high risk of getting paronychia – a cutaneous infection that affects the area around the nails. When we gnaw our nails, various bacteria and fungi penetrate the skin, causing irritation, redness and pain in the area around the nail.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, bacterial infections associated with the habit of gnawing nails are much more common than imaginable.

Warts on the fingers are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and very often appear on the nails of those children who gnaw their nails. These warts can also appear in the mouth and on other parts of the body if the children gnaw the nails all the time.

Problems with teeth

The habit of gnawing the nails can lead to the fact that the teeth will change their natural position. This habit weakens the teeth, so that a person can have serious problems with the health of the teeth.

According to research conducted by the Academy of General Dentistry, the second largest association of dentists in the United States, people who nail their nails spend an average of about $ 4,000 to treat dental problems caused by this habit.

Low quality of life

In one recent study it was found that people who gnaw nails live worse than those who do not suffer from this harmful habit. The quality of life is directly related to the duration of the time when you gnaw on the nails and the number of mutilated nails.

Once a person begins to resist his addiction and tries to stop nibbling his nails, he experiences negative emotions.
