Why Nibbling Is A Bad Habit

Onychophagia, limestone the as a habit of biting his nails,  it is a very common problem at any age and can bring a lot of negative health effects.

While many people think that this is a purely aesthetic problem, the truth is that the habit of gnawing nails leads to illnesses or problems from which it is better to stay away

This article will tell you why you should get rid of this bad habit as soon as possible.

Causes to gnaw nails

Gnawing nails are a favorite hobby among thousands of people, and they begin to develop it from early childhood. Indeed, most of us have ever done this, but only some retain this bad habit for many years.

One of its distinctive features is that we do not realize this in ourselves. That is, we gnaw our nails unconsciously, watching TV, when we go to the subway or stand in line at the ticket office.

For this reason, it becomes very difficult to stop biting your nails. Although we know that it looks disgusting, our fingers hurt or even we lose our efficiency by biting off the last piece of the nail. We still persistently continue to do this.

In order to stop, it is necessary to establish what caused the emergence of this “hobby”. The main reason, according to the researchers of the problem, is anxiety. This means that as long as we gnaw our nails, our mind seeks ways to solve problems , getting rid of worries and negative feelings.

Anxiety and stress are other important reasons why people gnaw nails. Over time, this habit becomes a kind of “nervous tic”, uncontrollable and frequent.

How to stop nibbling your nails?

In order to abandon this habit, many women attach special attention to the aesthetic side of the problem. In the case of men, this can be a little more complicated, but nothing is impossible.

Maybe you have already tried these varnishes with a bitter taste, bandaged your nails or even “paid” a fine, throwing coins into the jar every time you “catch” yourself behind this occupation …

However, often we need other incentives to quit this bad habit (as in the case of smoking or drinking alcohol). Often we are helped by knowing what problems it causes.

For example, the fact that the habit of gnawing nails affects their growth and structure , creating microcracks in different layers. Therefore, they grow unevenly and do not cover the entire surface of the nail bed.

What are the consequences of this habit?

Among the consequences of this habit can be divided into two main groups: physical and psychological or emotional.

In any case, it is worth remembering them if you want to stop nibbling on your nails or if you are looking for more reasons to make an effort and try to get rid of it again:

Poor growth of nails

When the nails are strongly bitten, they will take a long time to grow back, and if this happens, their shape will be wrong. This, for example, leads to the fact that the fingers lose their grace and this negatively affects the beauty of our hands.

When you want to take an item, open a package, use tools, type text on a computer or mobile device, the pain is  unbearable. We can not perform our daily actions effectively , because the simple contact of a finger with any material simply paralyzes us.

Bacterial infections

Nails are the “ideal” place where many bacteria multiply because our fingers are constantly in contact with objects or surfaces that can be contaminated.

Among the most “popular” species that can be found under the nails, you can mention salmonella and E. coli (both are transmitted through raw foods).

When we bring your fingers to your mouth, we automatically transfer these microorganisms to the mucous membranes, and from there directly to the body where they cause problems.

Nevertheless, some doctors believe that people who nail their nails, in contrast, have a stronger immune system due to constant contact with these bacteria: their body has “learned” to protect them and they are no longer sick.

Problems with teeth

We bite the nails, mainly with the front teeth. This increases the wear of the enamel at the edges of the teeth, and also increases the sensitivity of the oral cavity , as they lose their enamel.

And even more, this bad habit can also cause an incorrect bite and problems with chewing, and also with sleep if we can not completely close our mouth.

Emotional Factor

One of the typical signs of those who gnaw nails is that they are trying to hide their hands. In addition to beauty issues, the truth is that nobody likes the sight of bitten or cracked nails.

Among the psychological consequences of this habit can be listed shame, low self-esteem, disappointment and sadness.

In turn, this causes social problems, especially for women who prefer not to see their friends or acquaintances, so as not to become a victim of their condemnation.

Joint pain

Although this may seem strange, the habit of gnawing nails can cause pain in the cervical region and jaw, due to the load on the muscles.

Infectious diseases

If you chew on your nails, it makes you more vulnerable to a disease called paronychia. It is an infection of the fingers, which causes swelling, redness and suppuration.

It develops when bacteria get into cracks or ruptures on the skin (which happens often, because the fingers are always in contact with saliva).

Fungal infection can also be a frequent problem , because the fingers are not protected with nails.
